How to Prepare Kids for a Family Photoshoot (Without Tears!)

A calm, fun session is possible ,even with toddlers in tow.

You’ve booked your family photoshoot in Cairns and you’re excited… but also slightly panicked.

“What if the kids don’t cooperate? What if someone melts down? What if it’s me?”

Take a deep breath,  it’s totally normal to feel this way. As a Cairns family photographer, I’ve worked with every kind of child (and parent)  from shy little ones to wild, high-energy explorers, and the good news is, we always get the magic.

Here are my tried-and-true tips to help prepare your kids for a relaxed, tear-free family session.

1. Talk About It Like It’s an Adventure

Instead of calling it a “photoshoot,” describe it like an outing or fun activity. For example:

“We’re going to the beach/field to play and someone will take some happy photos of us!”

When kids feel like it’s something for them  not something they have to sit still for  they’re more likely to engage naturally.

Bonus tip: Show them photos from a previous session (yours or from my portfolio) so they understand what to expect.

2. Dress for Comfort and Style

Yes, I’m all for dreamy, coordinated outfits  but not at the expense of comfort. Scratchy tags, tight collars, or stiff shoes can quickly derail a session.

Stick to:

• Soft, breathable fabrics (especially important in Cairns warm climate)

• Layers you can remove if it gets too hot

• Simple, neutral colours or earth tones that blend beautifully with natural light

3. Make Sure They’re Fed & Rested

This one’s a classic for a reason.

A full belly and a good nap make a huge difference. Bring water and easy, non-messy snacks just in case.

Avoid sugary snacks right before the session  a banana or rice crackers go a lot further than a red lollipop!

4. Bring a Comfort Item (Just in Case)

A favourite toy, blanket, or dummy can help a child feel safe if they get overwhelmed.

Often we’ll even include these items in a few photos , which makes the memory even more special later on.

5. Let Go of “Perfect”

Real talk: The best photos aren’t always the ones where everyone is looking at the camera. The ones you’ll treasure most are often the in-between moments — your child running into your arms, giggling in your lap, or wrapping themselves around your leg.

If your little one needs a moment, we’ll take a break. If they want to run wild, I’ll follow them with the camera. My sessions are always flexible, play-based, and child-led.

6. Leave Time to Settle In

Try not to rush to the shoot straight from somewhere stressful.

If you can, arrive 5–10 minutes early so the kids can explore the space, get familiar with me, and feel grounded before we start. No pressure, no rush.

7. Trust the Process  I’ve Got You

As a family photographer based in Cairns, I’m used to the unpredictability that comes with kids. I’ve made wolf sounds, played peek-a-boo with my camera, and even held toddlers while snapping shots. I’ll work with your child’s mood, energy, and pace  so you don’t have to stress.

Your job is just to show up and love on your family. I’ll do the rest.

Final Thoughts

There’s no such thing as a “perfect” session only real ones.

And that’s what we’re here to capture: connection, laughter, and the wild, beautiful chaos of family life.
