In-home newborn sessions are designed to feel calm, natural, and pressure-free, especially in those early weeks when everything is still settling. You don’t need to know which room has the best light or how to set anything up. That’s my job.

Here’s how to prepare in a simple, realistic way that suits Cairns homes, weather, and real life with a newborn.

1. You Don’t Need to Find the Light - I Will

You do not need to:

• Decide which room we’ll shoot in

• Stress about window direction

• Worry if it’s cloudy or raining

When I arrive, I’ll walk through your home with you and choose the best spots based on the light on the day. Overcast days are actually perfect for newborn photography, and we’ll gently move around as needed.

All you need to do is open curtains and blinds,  I’ll take it from there.

2. Think “Tidy”, Not “Perfect”

Your home does not need to look like a magazine.

Focus only on:

• Clearing bedside tables

• Tidying benches near windows

• Removing visual clutter from the floor in key rooms

Everything else can stay lived-in. Newborn sessions are about connection, not perfection.

3. Make the Bed (This Matters More Than You’d Expect)

Many in-home newborn photos happen on the bed, it’s where families naturally gather.

• Neutral bedding works best (white, cream, soft beige)

• Avoid busy patterns or bold colours

• Linen or cotton textures photograph beautifully in tropical light

If nothing else gets done, make the bed, it makes a huge difference.

4. Keep Baby Comfortable

A settled baby leads the session.

• Keep the room comfortably warm

• Use air-conditioning or fans gently (no direct airflow on baby)

• Have a wrap or blanket nearby

Feeding, changing, and cuddles are all part of the session, we move at your baby’s pace.

5. What to Wear (Simple Is Best)

Soft, breathable fabrics work beautifully in Cairns.

For parents:

• Neutral tones (white, cream, oatmeal, soft browns, muted greens)

• Linen or cotton

• Bare feet are always welcome

For baby:

• A neutral wrap, nappy cover, or simple onesie

• No logos or bold prints

You don’t need to match, just stay within a soft, cohesive colour palette.

6. Let the Session Unfold Naturally

You don’t need to pose, perform, or entertain, ill guide you gently

Some of the most meaningful images happen:

• While you’re soothing your baby

• During a feed

• In quiet in-between moments

I’ll guide you gently when needed and also let things unfold naturally.

7. Cairns Weather Is Welcome

Humidity, rain, and cloudy skies are part of life here, and they photograph beautifully indoors.

• Morning sessions often suit the light and temperature best

• Rainy days create soft, intimate light

• There’s no “bad weather” for an in-home session

We work with the day, not against it.

Final Thought

Your only job is to be present with your baby.

I’ll handle the light, the flow, and the gentle guidance.

Your home, exactly as it is, is the perfect place to tell this part of your story.
