Bonnie + Ben at Elandra Resort | A Wedding Day Full of Family, Feeling and Fun

Some wedding days have one clear mood from beginning to end.

Bonnie and Ben’s definitely didn’t.

And I mean that in the best possible way.

Their day moved from laughter and excitement in the morning, to some genuinely emotional moments during the ceremony, and then straight back into celebration mode once the formal part was done.

Add their two children right into the middle of it all and it became one of those wedding days that felt completely alive.

Not overly staged. Not too polished. Just full of people, personality and all the little things that make a wedding actually memorable.

A morning that felt relaxed from the very beginning

The morning had such an easy, fun energy.

There was plenty happening, but it never felt overly serious. Everyone was getting ready, people were coming and going, the kids were part of it all, and there was that familiar wedding-morning mix of excitement and mild chaos.

Which, from a photography perspective, is pretty much perfect.

I always love having time to photograph this part of a wedding because it gives the gallery so much personality.

Yes, there are the beautiful details and portraits.

But there are also the things you probably don't realise I’m photographing at the time  the looks between people, the laughter in the background, the kids doing something completely unexpected and those little interactions that would otherwise be forgotten.

Those are often the photographs that end up meaning the most.

Their children weren’t just attending the wedding

One of the things that made Bonnie and Ben’s day so special was having their two children so involved in the celebration.

They weren’t just guests standing somewhere in the background.

They were part of the story.

And I think weddings with children have their own kind of magic because they make everything wonderfully unpredictable.

You can plan the timeline.

You can plan the ceremony.

You can even plan exactly where everyone is supposed to stand.

Children, however, have their own plans.

And those unscripted moments are often where the best photographs happen.

A cuddle at exactly the right moment.

A child reaching for Mum or Dad.

A completely serious ceremony suddenly interrupted by something hilarious.

It makes the photographs feel real because they are real.

Then everything changed during the ceremony

The fun energy of the morning shifted as soon as the ceremony began.

Suddenly there was this completely different atmosphere.

It became quieter, more emotional and much more about what the day actually represented for Bonnie and Ben and their little family.

That change in mood is one of the reasons I love photographing an entire wedding story rather than simply creating a collection of pretty portraits.

A wedding gallery should have rhythm.

There should be photographs that make you laugh.

Photographs that make you stop for a second.

Photographs where everyone looks incredible.

And photographs that are important simply because of who is in them.

Bonnie and Ben’s ceremony had plenty of those.

And then… party time

Once the emotional part was over, the energy came straight back.

There is something very fun about photographing a smaller wedding where everyone genuinely knows one another.

People relax quickly.

The formalities disappear.

And suddenly it feels less like a wedding production and more like one big celebration.

That was absolutely the case here.

The atmosphere became louder, happier and a little less predictable as the evening went on which is normally a very good sign.

This is also where I tend to step back even more as a photographer.

I’ll guide things when guidance is needed, but once everyone is having fun, I want to let that happen.

You don’t need me interrupting every five minutes to manufacture a moment.

The good stuff is already happening.

Why family-centred weddings are some of my favourites to photograph

Bonnie and Ben’s wedding was photographed at Elandra Resort in Mission Beach, but it represents exactly the kind of wedding storytelling I love bringing to couples here in Wollongong, throughout the Illawarra and across the NSW South Coast.

I’m especially drawn to weddings where the day feels centred around the people rather than the production.

Family.

Children.

Friends who have known you forever.

Real reactions.

Beautiful portraits without spending half the wedding posing for them.

And enough breathing room in the day to actually experience what you've spent months planning.

The South Coast has some incredible settings for this kind of celebration  from intimate coastal weddings around Wollongong and the northern Illawarra to relaxed weddings through Kiama, Gerringong and further down the coast.

But whatever the location looks like, the way I photograph it stays pretty consistent.

I want the beautiful shots.

But I also want the photograph of your child squeezing your hand.

Your dad trying not to cry.

Your friends absolutely losing it on the dance floor.

And all the tiny moments happening around you that you didn’t even know were happening.

Because those are the photographs that turn a wedding gallery into your wedding story.
